Thanks for the response, but I am confused. As mentioned in my
first post, I can create video compliant DVDs using the "hdiutil
makehybrid" method. Is there a different implementation between
"makehybrid" and "create"?
Regarding the "busy" part, that is the message that hdiutil throws
when running the image creation. It almost seems like hdiutil is
trying to run mount_udf even before it has created the filesystem.
As for burning, yes, the image is unmounted when I burn it.
So, why is the resulting disk not readable on my MacBook Pro? I
understand (by your reply) that it potentially would not work in a
set-top box, but shouldn't my Mac be able to read the disk as a data
DVD?

Hi Jeffrey,
The UDF implementation being used in hdiutil is not video compliant
and is meant for the creation of cross-platform discs with data
content. While the created discs may appear to work in some set-
top players, more 'compliant' players will not play these discs.
Regarding your issues with the image being busy and trying to burn
it. Please make sure the disk image is unmounted prior to burning
it or the resulting disc will not be burned correctly. If you
can't unmount it because it says its busy, try running lsof from
the command line to determine what on the disk image might be being
accessed.

I have found ways to use hdiutil to make a video DVD, specifically:

The linked technique uses the makehybrid verb for hdiutil. I am
wondering if the same can be accomplished by using the create
verb. So, I created a home movie using iDVD, and copied the
VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a new folder on my hard drive
(TEST).
$ hdiutil create -fs UDF -srcfolder TEST DVDminimal
mount_udf: mount_udf: open /dev/disk3 failed, Resource busy:
Resource busy
/sbin/mount failed with error 256
.......................................................................
created: /Users/jeff/Desktop/DVDminimal.dmg
I can open the image and see all the files fine, despite the mount
error when creating the image. I burned this to a DVD-R using
DiskUtility. But when I insert it into my Mac's drive, I get a
"You inserted a blank disk" dialog.
So, either the creation did not produce a proper disk image, or
the burning produced an improper DVD. Anyone have an idea about
this?
