discs and encoders

On the subject of DVD-Rs, I've seen some Pioneer discs at Tekserve in NYC
which were $24 each - too much, and they didn't say General Media or
Authoring on them, so I don't trust them - and Verbatim makes GM DVDs as
well. I've been trying to find out if anyone is planning on making
double-sided DVD-Rs for General Media, but haven't gotten anywhere. If
anyone knows if this is in the pipeline, I would appreciate hearing about
it.

We've been using Heuris MPP2 for a couple of weeks now, haven't figured the
thing out entirely, but the quality is way better than the Apple encoder. It
is a quirky program, but when it works, it works well. Also, MPP2, which is
about $1000, only does CBR encoding, whereas the DVD version (about $1500)
also does VBR, which I wasn't aware of. With that in mind, it is still not
producing MPEGs of a high enough quality for some of our clients. So, those
of you using hardware encoders, I'd like to hear what you would recommend,
off-list if need be. I realize we're going to have to spend a bucket of
money, but so be it.

Thanks
