Re: quality question

Hi Everybody,

I apologize for being so late to the table on this discussion. I just got back
from NAB where DVD Studio Pro was a huge hit.

DOVECOM, I appreciate your candidness, but you are wrong on several points.

I am trying to be a kindler, gentler person and if you want to discuss this
rationally, contact me privately. (off list) But I do need to inform everyone,
that a Hardware encoder is not necessarily any better quality wise than a
software one. The advantages of hardware are usually speed, and additional
analog/digital inputs

The question of The Quality of the QuickTime MPEG Exporter (Which comes free
with DVD SP) is a very subjective one. The only way to see if it will satisfy
you is to take YOUR video and encode it. If you like the results, great. If
not, cough up some more money and buy an encoder whose MPEG you do like. You
cannot post a Question like "Is it professional" without getting 100 different
answers. Do your homework, don't look for cliff notes.

But since you get the QT MPEG Exporter for free, that should be your starting
point. Then if you find it lacking, break out the Mastercard.

Also, make sure that you view your encoded material on a Video monitor, not
just the computer's VGA monitor, because you can never get a truly accurate
picture of an NTSC Interlaced signal, on a progressive scan, VGA monitor.

I am in the midst of doing a head to head encoding comparison of all of the
top MPEG 2 hardware and software encoders, with different types of video from
DV to HD.

When I am done, I will post the info. on how to view the results.

Till then, don't let the nay sayers talk you out of making DVD's with DVDSP.
DVD is the final piece of the Digital Video revolution - 'DISTRIBUTION'. Any
independent filmmaker who is not considering this tool is either not in the
game, or not truly 'Independent.'

JD

PS- If you use a program, and you get paid... It's 'Professional'
