Equipment advice needed

All,

Just received my copy of Final Cut Pro 3 and starting on the tutorials. Very nice package! For now, I have it installed on a dual 500 G4, but in the next few months, I'll be moving to a new system.

Anyhow, in working out the details of that system, I've learned that it's best to have an external video monitor. I'm doing home video stuff so would be interested in getting something inexpensive and small. However, quality is very important to me so I'll gladly pay a higher price for that.

Secondly, my folks have all their home movies on 8mm reels. I know there are services out there that transfer such footage to VHS. However, I want to transfer them to DVD. Any advice on what type of equipment it would take to do this? It would be fantastic if such a device could output DV (which is what I do all my editing in). However, my mini-DV cam can accept S-Video or normal video input. If at all possible though, I'd like to cut down on the number of in-between formats to keep quality as good as possible.

Would it be cheaper to have a professional service transfer the 8mm footage to DV? Or, is it possible to rent such equipment?

TIA,

Rick Sharp
