OT QT movie from MPEG 2 for DP monitor use.

Problem ..

have client sent me a dvd with mpeg 2 on it to be remastered with 5.1 foley mix.
have extracted video mpeg 2 streams and converted to a lower res QT format to monitor inside DP(digital performer audio sequencing package) while 5.1 mix is constructed.
so far so good.
However reconstructing Dvd with new ac-3 encoded soundtrack inside DVDSP I find audio way out of sync with original material...note this is still in premastered monitoring mode. IE not the sync issue normally reported by users of DVDSP due to encoding issues.

I have tried various QT formats and Keyframe/frame rates..no avail..I have also tried recording original stero (guide) track in the analog domain and have noticed a loss of sync as much as .5 secs every 5 secs or so...sync loss is varispeed in nature whether encoded back from DP or extracted in analog domain from RT playback of original dvd (apple DVD player).
What also intrested me was a varible playback time of the same dvd everytime I played it...
differences of upto 20 secs for a 7 min film! chased usual suspects on mac that may cause playback isses; ethernet, extensions etc.

Help on Any way to work with extracted/converted mpeg2 as QT in Audio sequencer which can then be synced back to original would be appreciated...

Mystified by all things dvd

TIA
