Also, at least in our agency IMAP is disabled by default on all of
the exchange servers... I had to specifically request it be enabled
on our local exchange.
Other facilities in our agency don't seem to know how to do that, so
I pimp out our exchange address to other mac users in need of IMAP
with Exchange.
Now we have a small "entourage fans against apple mail fans" going on
since Tiger was released. Many former Entourage users want apple
mail now because of Spotlight. I also feel Apple Mail is superior
looking, acting, and faster, but that's just me.
The issue we have is Entourage WILL connect without IMAP enabled, so
now we have to justify WHY we need imap enabled, and the common
answer is "use entourage" which is not acceptable to me.

In Mail.app edit your SMTP server and select authentication. For the

Actually I should have simply stated, use the same credentials you
entered
for the incoming server since you can receive mail. :)
I did want to mention something about the "Exchange" vs. IMAP
accounts in
Mail.app. Apple decided to use OWA and IMAP with the Exchange
account to
filter out Exchange specific mails which for me meant it wouldn't
show some
meeting requests. This was the case with 10.3 so I'm not sure if it
is still
hosed up with 10.4 but I'd be careful using the Exchange mode vs. a
standard
IMAP account. I was hoping they finally went the WebDAV route like
Entourage
with the Exchange accounts for 10.4 but no such luck.

Anyway, like everyone else, we're migrating to active directory.
We're only
partially there. We still have our Exchange 5.5 server, and will

foreseeable future.
I can set up Mail to retrieve my email from my Exchange account
(as an
exchange account) no problem (although syncing is terribly slow),

can't send any email outside of my building. I can send email
within my
building fine, but not outside the building, not even to .mil
addresses.
Same thing happens if I set it up as an IMAP account.
My Exchange admin (who is always helpful, but just can't figure
this out)
says that I need no authentication to send email. When I had
Panther and
Mail, and before we began the AD migration, I used to get an error
message
that relaying was prohibited. My admin said he allowed relaying
for me
specifically, and it still didn't work. Still got the same error
message.
Now I just get a very generic error message that doesn't really
say anything
other than I can't send the email (not helpful!).
I've also tried to set up AKO as my SMTP server, that hasn't
worked either.
Any ideas out there? Anyone have any idea what my Exchange admin
might be
missing?
Any help/suggestions appreciated.
