Re: [Fed-Talk] Tiger and Exchange and Mail.app, oh my

OOPS, let me make a correction here...

the correct commands would be (from terminal)

telnet yoursmtpserver 25
helo
mail from: email@hidden
rcpt to: email@hidden

===

you should then get the error. in the previous message I did not state HELO, and I also typed "mail to:" instead of "rcpt to:". (too many programming languages running in my head and I confused it with SMTP protocol).

use the rcpt to: instead of mail to:

Even though mail doesnt give you a detailed error, you can actually see what the problem is yourself by going through somewhat of a back door... do the following:

Open a terminal window:

type:

telnet yoursmtpaddress 25
mail from: email@hidden
mail to: email@hidden

you should then see an error message saying relaying denied, authentication required, etc.

I suspect it's a relaying error if you can send to local accounts, but the above will tell you exactly. in the "mail to:" section above, try using a local address and then try using an external address and see the difference.

Anyway, like everyone else, we're migrating to active directory. We're only
partially there. We still have our Exchange 5.5 server, and will for the
foreseeable future.

I can set up Mail to retrieve my email from my Exchange account (as an
exchange account) no problem (although syncing is terribly slow), but I
can't send any email outside of my building. I can send email within my
building fine, but not outside the building, not even to .mil addresses.
Same thing happens if I set it up as an IMAP account.

My Exchange admin (who is always helpful, but just can't figure this out)
says that I need no authentication to send email. When I had Panther and
Mail, and before we began the AD migration, I used to get an error message
that relaying was prohibited. My admin said he allowed relaying for me
specifically, and it still didn't work. Still got the same error message.
Now I just get a very generic error message that doesn't really say anything
other than I can't send the email (not helpful!).

I've also tried to set up AKO as my SMTP server, that hasn't worked either.

Any ideas out there? Anyone have any idea what my Exchange admin might be
missing?

Any help/suggestions appreciated.
