There is no upgrade price from previous versions to ARD 3.0. We welcome your feedback at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ remotedesktop.html

Once upon a time I used to use (I believe) the -NXHost option on NEXTSTEP to run an application on one NeXTstation and display it on another NeXTstation (much like X windows display option). It was quite fast and much faster than my experiences with the previous version of ARD (e.g., I could actually play games on one machine and display it on another).

Does anyone know if ARD has an option such as this (as opposed to their current approach of repainting the whole screen, slowly and painfully)?

With Aqua came the loss of the ability to do remote display a'la X11.

ARD is uses VNC for remote control display. I use it across a WAN and VPN connection all the time.
