Re: [Fed-Talk] New MacBooks - can camera come out?

I've been told that for NRL the blanket prohibition is only for cell phone cameras and that cameras in a laptop are fine as long as the person carrying it has a camera pass. This was from two different people, and one claims that our code actually has a Windows laptop or two with built-in cameras already. Am I misinformed?

Glen

Call security about how to disable the camera so someone else can use the laptop, the response we got was that "No computer with a built-in camera should have ever been purchased at NRL."  That was the response we got and it came from the head of NRL Security.   I'm sure any Apple and GTSI representative wishing to discuss what products can be sold to NRL (the last Navy base with a high percentage of Macs) can actually get to talk to the head of NRL security.

Also, camera passes can be obtained only for specific needs, odds are the person with the laptop and the camera pass is breaking the intent of the camera rules.

We're actually in the same boat, we have a laptop that was purchased for a project that required a digital camera and at the time it was thought to be possible so they bought a laptop with a camera to avoid juggling two items at once while on ships.

Specifically that obscuring the lens with epoxy has been accepted as a legitimate fix in some places for cell phone cameras.  Have any of you in secure locations found this to be true?

Even in our unclassified areas this not going to pass.  The purchase will be shot down if there is a camera in the laptop, pda, or cell phone.  You can't enter through our gate with those devices.
