Here is a tip:
Launch the Activity Monitor (/Applications/Utilities).
You want to see if a process named CAC (or AMSmartCard) is running. It
should run when your card is inserted, and quit when your card is removed.
If you don't see this, then look for a process named pcscd.
If pcscd is not running, disconnect the reader and then reconnect it. If
pcscd is still not running, try rebooting. If still no pcscd, then your
card reader is busted or not supported.
If you see pcscd but not CAC (or AMSmartCard) then launch the Console
utility and look at your system.log. You should see a message every time
the card is inserted and removed.
If you only see messages when the card is removed, you've run into a bug in
securityd where it forgets about the card. A reboot is necessary if this
happens.
If you don't see any messages at all, then your card or the card reader are
bad. Try rebooting and testing again to be sure.
If you see the CAC or AMSmartCard process running, you should be good to go.
Check for the certificates using the Keychain Access utility. Click the
button in the lower left corner of the Keychain Access window to toggle the
keychains panel. You should see "Smart card #xx" appear, and clicking on it
should show your certificates.
