I concurred with Dave.
For this reason I have created U.S. Senate Certified Apple Intel-Based Templates with Hardware Specific (i.e., iMac 17 "-24 ", MacBook Pro 2.0-2.33GHz Intel Core Duo, MacBook Pro 2.0-2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and Mac Pro.)
As a good example of Mac Book Pro Intel Core 2 Duo, I have utilized Base Image for all of MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo lines; 15" – 17" and 2.0 GHz – 2.33 GHz, but you can not restore it's image to Mac Book Pro Intel Core Duo.
That said, iMac, MacBook Pro Intel Core 2Duo and Mac Pro are working same methods to restores image from External FireWire HD to be imaging for new Apple computer w/ Hardware Specifics.
BTW, I have been exclusively utilizing Apple Disk Utility, External FireWire HD and Unix command with Apple Terminal for creating the Apple Image.

Mike,
If you image the latest hardware you have then you basically have an
universal image that is backwards compatible. Best practices for
imaging say to have one image for portables and one for desktops
though in my experience I have not seen a case yet where a single
image built off the latest hardware/software release did not work on
all previous models of that architecture.
