Re: [Fed-Talk] Smartcard readers

I looked at the take-apart on the ifixit website and I don't believe you could fit a wider ExpressCard device into the MBP, unless you took one of the USB ports out. The battery and disk drive take up the lower portion of the base and the optical drive takes up the entire right side. There's no room under the hinge either (like old Powerbooks). Until someone comes up with a different battery configuration, I don't see how Apple could have squeezed anything more into either MacBook.

Well, they could have if they increased the height of the base, then you could stack some components, but that ends up adding weight and size.

We're still talking about the Pro version only also. I'd still prefer some way to get wide USB devices plugged in.

2cm is 4/5", enough for a FW400/800 port

I look at it as something like cellular broadband wireless; sure I'd like to have it built into the machine, but I'd also like to be able to change providers, or change standards easily. My only gripe with the design of the new laptops is that the USB slots are pretty close together, so it's hard to have more than one wide USB device plugged in at a time.

If Apple would drop ExpressCard/34 and use ExpressCard/54 instead, we could use readers in the ExpressCard slot.

As it is, the 34mm slot is too small for a card reader.  It's just 2cm difference!
