Spent all day reviewing CMS and the documentation for the openssl command line tool on openssl.org (create private key, create certificate, create cms). Seemed to have everything I needed. Wrote out a plan to test. then Boom! Mac OS X's version of openssl doesn't support the cms command. Aaauugh!
Apple doesn't seem to have a lot of commitment to 3rd party crypto.
I guess I need to drop into C APIs and link against some of the suggested libraries.
