Odd question here--one of my clients makes a custom *passthrough cable* for Firewire devices. According to a new user, upon plugging in our cable, sparks shot out of his computer, thoroughly burning it. The PowerBook will not turn on now. Is that possible? I don't have a vested interest in the claim being false, but it sounds pretty fishy.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. So my question is, what specifically would have to happen in order for a Firewire cable to severely damage a PowerBook?

You didn't mention which model it was, but early G4 TiBooks were known to be susceptible to ESD or other damaging conditions and toast the PHY. When sent to Apple for repair the logic boards were returned with extra parts soldered on to prevent the problem from occurring again. Happened to mine. You should be able to Google for it and find some web pages with the gory details. The damage was usually limited to a dead FW port. I don't think I ever heard of sparks or completely toasted machines.
