Firewire capable of damaging computer?

Hi,

Odd question here--one of my clients makes a custom *passthrough cable* for Firewire devices. According to a new user, upon plugging in our cable, sparks shot out of his computer, thoroughly burning it. The PowerBook will not turn on now. Is that possible? I don't have a vested interest in the claim being false, but it sounds pretty fishy.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. So my question is, what specifically would have to happen in order for a Firewire cable to severely damage a PowerBook?

Thanks,
-Chilton
