RE: Firewire capable of damaging computer?

What type is your client's "custom passthrough cable"? 6-pin cables carry data and power from the FireWire bus through to the device. 4-pin "iLink" cables carry data only.

It's interesting to note that according to the 1394-1995 spec, Firewire power can vary in voltage between 8V and 33V, and current can be up to 1.5 Amps. So, yes, there's a very good liklihood that if the cable was miswired, with POWER+ crossed on any of the TPA/B lines, you'd have a serious condition on your hands. This would be the case if the cable was wired backwards: you'd have POWER+ going into TPA+, which would certainly blow the port. I wouldn't think it would fry the mobo, but it's possible. It depends on the vreg circuitry in use.

At any rate, get ahold of the cable and check it out!

Alex
