Strange fw spb-2 scanner behaviour

We have strange situation here.
We have mac g4, osx 10.2.8. We use scsitasklib.

1. When we have g4 running we turn on the scanner and plug it in. After
that we can work with the scanner properly.
2. If we plug the scanner out of the mac and then plug it back but to
another fw port we have a situation, when first call to scsitak leads to
timeout.
3. The same situation, and this is more important for us to solve: User
reboots mac when scanner is turned on and plugged into the mac. After
booting the osx, first call to scanner (again via scsitask lib) leads to
timeout.
To avoid that user shall turn the scanner off each time he wants to
reboot and turn it on again after reboot.

Could you please advise, what can be wrong and with what? Scanner|Mac?
