Firewire newbie

Hi,
I have a data acquisition project that is based on firewire. I am attempting to use the IEEE-1394 Standalone Micro-Controller Module from Mindready. I would love to start a conversation either on or off list about using the Mindready module. I am having a bit of a problem getting over the hump to start working with this system. In particular I'm a bit fuzzy about a statement that Mindready makes in their literature.

"With this board, integrators do not need to write specific software for the SD-IO-400. A host computer using 1394 and control the unit remotely".

It's not at all clear to me just how control the module over the Firewire.
