Philip,
I don't know much about the PCI architecture on Macs but I do know that
some PC motherboards have on board peripherals which share the PCI bus.
So having nothing else plugged into the other PCI slots does not
necessarily mean there is no other PCI traffic on your bus.
We have even found that some server machines with multiple PCI slots
actually have more than one PCI bus and into which slot you choose to
put your card makes a difference. Finding out which slot to use can be
by trial and error (unless the Motherboard manufacturer has chosen to
share its specification with the world - Intel have but others have
not).
Does this happen on Macs?

Interesting comments, but I don't have any such PCI devices installed.
Unfortunately, this problem alternates with another issue: my listen DCL
callbacks simply STOP being invoked. Not only this, but another FW
audio product locked the machine when left streaming overnight.
Unfortunately, I only have this issue on this one machine, so thus far
I'm not sure what the issue is.
OT: I'm new to MacOSX, so this is basic question: Is there a way to
disable to onboard network card (or any other device) through some sort
of device manager? My test machine is pretty bare bones, but I might as
well give it a try.
