Re: video iPod has no FireWire support? / C. Cornaby

Could be ... but I would assume that since "sync up" time is nominally faster via FireWire than through USB 1.1 or USB 2.0, that Apple engineering would have rather opted for FireWire chip real estate ... (Large file and multi file transfer is faster via FireWire 1394a than USB 2.0, yes?) ... And the loss of a FireWire port also ham strings several iPod features like using it for an external hard drive and peer to peer networking.

Even with small file transfer performance being close to comparable, FireWire development, firmware, software & manufacturing costs are somewhat lower than USB.

Am I correct here, or just blowing smoke?

I've heard that Apple didn't simply have enough room for the Firewire chip on the board in order to get the iPod thin enough. At least that's what Ars Technica thought when they took it apart.

It seems that almost the entire professional audio world and the professional TV / Movie industry is embracing FireWire  ... and Apple is cutting FireWire out of the flagship iPod line?
