| Could be ... but I would assume that since "sync up" time is nominally faster via FireWire than through USB 1.1 or USB 2.0, that Apple engineering would have rather opted for FireWire chip real estate ... (Large file and multi file transfer is faster via FireWire 1394a than USB 2.0, yes?) ... And the loss of a FireWire port also ham strings several iPod features like using it for an external hard drive and peer to peer networking. Even with small file transfer performance being close to comparable, FireWire development, firmware, software & manufacturing costs are somewhat lower than USB.
