I can confirm this perception form a variety of people at various
technical levels (i.e end users, hardware clients, Mac developers, PC
developers). The fact that Apple doens't have FW800 ports on 1/2 the
Macs the sell and now doesn't have it on it's iPods is not
encouraging. Also with the x86 switch and the closer ties to Intel
(developer of USB) can't be good for Firewwire's existence going
forward.
All we need is Intel or Sony to come out with a AVC/61883 DV type
protocol for USB and it ill be all over for FireWire.

So, as if to drive my point home, yesterday a friend of mine who is

going through my box of cables offering him a choice of cable lengths.

I never saw the discussion in terms of whether iPod is a vehicle
to promote FireWire. That's would be like saying that iPod is a
vehicle to promote USB. FireWire and USB are just ways that you
connect iPods to a device to load songs onto them.
At one point Apple thought that the way that you should do it is
FireWire. Then it became FireWire and USB. Now it is USB. Not
sure how one could read anything into this other than Apple
backing off its commitment to FireWire.

While it is (or was) tempting to think of iPod as a vehicle to
promote FireWire, that's not why Apple makes iPod - not even close.
You will be (I hope!) happy to know that there has been no change
in the FireWire team at Apple; we are hard at work on future
products, and in the near term, an SDK update for folks using the
Developer Transition Kit.

Apple's removal of FireWire from the iPod is sending a message

The new iPod does not use FireWire (except I believe it can
charge from FireWire). FireWire fans of course may be sad to
see the change, but it's difficult to argue that FireWire would
making a difference for the majority of iPod customers today -
aside from adding cost and weight.
Was the professional audio world and TV / Movie industry using
iPod's FireWire port in some way?

It seems that almost the entire professional audio world and
the professional TV / Movie industry is embracing
FireWire ... and Apple is cutting FireWire out of the
flagship iPod line?
