I would suggest you consult the QuickTime documentation regarding writing a "VDIG" (Video Digitizer). Unless I'm out of date, this is the standard form of input for video from a camera (whether on FireWire, USB, or elsewhere). Your VDIG can simply take data from a file instead of taking it from other hardware.
