OT: iSight driver in 10.5.8

This is off topic.

I still use an external FireWire iSight (FWIS) Camera with an x86 MBP and a external Cinema Display. The FWIS works pretty well most of the time. I've noticed two issues.

1. Sometimes during either iChat or Skype the FWIS hangs up and stops working. The green light onthe FWIS stays on even after closing the window or quiting iChat or Skype. I can unplug the FWIS (wait a real 15 seconds) and plug it back in. However, the system doesn't see it in System Profiler. I have to reboot the system to get the camera working.

I do have an external FW-800 disk plugged into the FW-800 port. The disc is mounted but not usually being accessed when the hang happens. The disk holds all my iTunes music but I am not playing music when the hang happens. The disk is unaffected by the hang.

2. I am less sure this next issue has to do with the FWIS. There are times when I am having a video iChat using the FWIS. Everything will be running fine and then all of a sudden video and audio from my side are delayed by about 5-10 seconds to the other side. It all works fine but there is a huge latency. This happens often, but it can be fixed by closed the current iCHat session and starting a new one. I've seen this in Skype as well so I think that rules out iChat.

Issues that I think my trigger the #2 bug are:

a. I am often pushing the limit of VM with 4-8 GB of swap space. My system has 4 GB of real RAM (the max for my system).

b. I currently have a very slow 768/128 DSL line.

I am running 10.5.8.

If anyone has any ideas of either of these bugs or has seen them too please contact me either on or off list. If anyone at Apple knows of bugs related to this that might have been fixed in Snow Leopard, I be interested in knowing that, again either on or off list.

The fact that I can't reset the FWIS by unplug/replug is somewhat disturbing.

See below for my real email address.

Best,

leb
