Fortran's default setting for its binary files is what is referred to as a "blocked" write.
Other programs that expect binary data usually do not like the additional data
presented in blocked files. Some platforms, like the SGI's have an "asnunit"
command to write unblocked files. Fortran will do this with a direct access file by itself.
The only catch is that one must know the data length ie: 4 byte real, or 8 byte reals...
and one has to do the accounting for the file pointer position.

I have found that making a module with the file pointer variable and the open/close
and write routines is the easiest way in fortran 90 to generate a small library for this
purpose.
