Mark,
As an old Fortran programmer (think IBM 1620), the easiest installation for
GNU Fortran (g77-3.5) that I've found is on hpc.sourceforge.net. You need to
have the Apple developer tools installed first, which includes the gcc
compiler,etc. The developer tools are extras on the 10.3 distribution disks,
and require separate installation to add to OS X. If you want X11, Apple
hides it in an obscure place on the DVD distribution, so you have to search
high and low to find it.
