XLF and MPICH

I'm trying to get IBM's XL Fortran to work with the MPI package mpich.

I keep getting the same error when i try and configure mpich, namely

>>Cannot determine the form of external fortran names

Is there some sort of XLF option or configuration file that explicitly points these out, or is this something I should take to an mpich mailing list?
