The problem ended up being that the KeyboardFocus functions seem to only
accept a WindowPtr returned from FrontWindow(). Getting the window from the
event message (i.e. (WindowPtr)theEvent.message ), which I was doing, didn't
work, of course.

Hi,

just a guess: Are you sure theEvent.message contains a window pointer for update events? Have you tried:

GetWindowFromPort( (GrafPtr)theEvent.message );

???
