Basically what the installer does is stop the daemon if it is
running and launches the new/updated one. But I am puzzled why there
is not this problem in 10.3 and 10.4.
That message is printed out by the job_reap function in
launchd_core_logic.c. I'd guess that your daemon is crashing on 10.5
when launchd tries to kill it, but it's difficult to say without more
information.
