I do have Java 5.0 installed, but I get a NullPointerException when I
try to to run Java Preferences, same as many others I'm afraid. The
crash record is no longer in my log files and I haven't been able to
reinstall the app after deleting it. So I need to know what this app
actually changes in the system.

I cannot get the Apple supplied Java Preferences application to

Please describe what happens when it doesn't run. Is there an
alert? A
dialog? Anything in Console.app?
Java Preferences requires J2SE 5.0 installed in order to run. If
you have
that, it should run; without it, it won't. If J2SE 5.0 is
installed and
it's not running, it's unlikely that changing a plist file will
make it run.
