Could be, but list search has worked for me every time I've used it in the
past several months. I don't recall a single failure.
In future, it's best to report list and archive problems to the java-dev
list-admin or to the list-gods who make the list-servers work:

There's a reason that every list posting distributed has a sig like:
"Do not post admin requests to the list. They will be ignored.
Java-dev mailing list [an important email address appears here]"
