When I put the dvd which has 10.4.6 it won't even recognize. Since it is
a dual boot, I have to press option key for it show the two Oses( Mac
and XP). IS there another key I need to press to start OS from dvd drive
?

You should be able to plug CD which came with your iMac and have Mac OS
X reinstalled. It should be possible to re-install Mac OS X without
wiping out hard drive. Pay attention to choices installed will provide.
You looking for something like "Install + Archive" - it will install
fresh copy of OS and "archive" existing one.
