0) What does this have to do with Java development?

1) Are you sure the DVD you are using is the one that came with the system?
2) Does that DVD look damaged?
3) Can you mount that DVD in any other system you have available to
verify it isn't damaged?
4) If you can still boot into XP can you see that DVD (or any CD/DVD)
for that matter? (disc drive may be having issues).

If you have another Mac, another thing to try is booting that one from the CD, putting the first Mac into Firewire target disk mode (hold down 'T" when booting) and installing from the second Mac onto the first plugged in as an external drive.
