Googled for:
  java active render tutorial

which quickly found this page:
  <http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/extra/fullscreen/rendering.html>

with this suggestion under "Programming Tips":
  "Use the setIgnoreRepaint method on your application window
    *AND COMPONENTS* ..."  (emphasis added)

Also search that page for "race condition" and "deadlock".

May want to read some of the other top google hits, too.  They seem like
good examples.
