Hi Greg,
Thanks for pointing that out. In my init method, I set the ignoreRepaint to true for my application window. I will try setting it on all the subcomponents as well and see how that goes.

Robert:
I tried putting the painting thread to sleep after repaints to give the system time to do it's thing, but that didn't help.

Johnny Kewl responded earlier and suggested putting the paintComponents into an invokeAndWait call. I'm going to try that out as well.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions, please keep them coming. Again, this is a very weird issue for me since I have not been able to recreate it on a windows machine.

which quickly found this page:

with this suggestion under "Programming Tips":
"Use the setIgnoreRepaint method on your application window
*AND COMPONENTS* ..." (emphasis added)

Also search that page for "race condition" and "deadlock".

May want to read some of the other top google hits, too. They seem like
good examples.
