RE: Java SE 6 Developer Preview 9

Thanks Bill, here is the feedback I've submitted. Please everyone no
comments or discussion on this, this is just information only.

Apple's current policy on supporting Java releases is causing us great
difficulty because we cannot use the latest versions of Java. In this
case the Windows, Linux, and Solaris versions of Java 6 have been
available for over a year, yet there is no clear direction from Apple on
if an when Java 6 on OS X will ever see the light of day. There are many
features we want to use in Java 6 in order to offer a better user
experience to our customers, but cannot because there is no Java 6
release for OS X yet.

It is our policy to support the latest two versions of OS X, in this
case 10.4 and 10.5. Under this policy it was only recently that we were
able to utilize Java 5 on Macintosh - almost 3 years after it was widely
available on other platforms.

Furthermore, Apple's continued silence on the Java plans, and policy of
keeping Java developers in the dark constantly is causing a great deal
of uncertainty in our product development. Consequently, Apple's
behavior in this matter is causing enormous animosity in the Macintosh
Java developer community. We feel like Apple has basically turned their
backs on us.

If Apple's corporate goal is to force Java developers to move to Cocoa
by crippling our platform independent development technology - then just
be honest and say so and we can make better product development
decisions.

Don't waste your time filing a bug. Inability or unwillingness to
support Java is not a bug, it's more than likely some type of marketing
decision and it may be market based.

Instead, I would recommend that you file your comments at the OS X
feedback link at:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

I came from an environment of 20+ years in Unix. As the Unix market
declined further and further, I switched to Linux. Linux is a fine OS,
but it does have some shortcomings, such as the incredible differences
that seem to occur from version to version and even release to release.
Myself and others I know got a little fed up with the "download,
install, patch, re-patch, re-configure" path that seems to be associated

with Linux. It's for this reason that I moved to OS X. Here we have (or
had) an OS that's Unix based and yet doesn't (or didn't) seem to need
some of the administrative attention that Linux seems too frequently to
demand. To date this has, for the most part, been true. I am, however,
now at a point where I must reconsider distributing and/or recommending
the use of OS X to clients. I switched to OS X to do Java development,
not because it has a lot of gimmicky features as seems inherent in
Leopard. If Java isn't kept up to date on OS X, then there's no reason
for me to recommend it to clients, and quite honestly, no reason to buy
any more hardware or OS releases from Apple.

I think an argument like this, pointed at those in power will carry a
lot more weight than bug reports for a product that, for all practical
purposes, doesn't and may not exist. Bug reports end up in the hands of
other developers. General feedback (hopefully) ends up in the hands of
those making decisions.

Just my opinions,

Bill Wagner
