According to that article:
"... BD-J is based on Java version 1.3."
Therefore, you should already be able to compile for the BD-J target
platform using either Java 5 or JDK 1.4 with the -target and -source
options set to "1.3".
However, according to this:

BD-J is a variant of J2ME/JME, which is a completely different animal from
J2SE/JSE. It also makes the Wikipedia article wrong.
A delayed Java 6 may indeed be a development obstacle, just not for BD-J.
