I'm telling you things about Blu-Ray that you didn't seem to already know, like the fact that Blu-Ray doesn't imply BD-J. Now that HD-DVD is dead, BD-J will get more adopters. Blu-Ray probably will. We'll see if BD-J does. Between the compatibility problems and the difficulty of developing for BD-J, a lot of content providers will probably choose HDMV. On the other hand, with no need to simplify content to work in both formats, other providers may take a second look at BD-J. The titles like Spidey 3 are very cool. Cool enough to get consumers to buy a new $300 machine in a recessionary economy? We'll see.
Thats gotta be news to Apple, considering they just launched HD download movie rentals for the Apple TV. I hope Steve won't be too disappointed.
The version of Java is only part of the issue. There's also the environment. For BD-J and its predecessor, MHP (Multimedia Home Platform), you'll be developing Xlets, and I couldn't find an Xlet environment that offered non-trivial functionality on the Mac. And of course, you'll have to be a BDA licensee to actually get the org.bluray APIs to compile against. I gave up about halfway through the MHP book, because I think I have better uses for my time, and can get more consulting business doing other things. Maybe you'll have better luck. Some of the company reps at JavaOne TV day said there was huge demand for developers to work at the companies that develop BD-J content for the big studios, and there's definitely _some_ demand there (I've talked with a few). So maybe it'll work out for you. I've looked, and I'm not real impressed. Your mileage may vary. --Chris |
