I set my computer's name to "foo.parc.com" in
that pane, then run "hostname", and what I get back is "foo".
Yes. "foo" is a hostname. "parc.com" is a domain.
Do you perhaps want the 'domainname' command? See 'man domainname'.
Or maybe you should use Mac OS X Server?
