I don't have an direct answer to your question, but I thought I'd chime in
on the spacing between components part. I've found that the Apple widgets
have a extra padding around them on Leopard. For example, here are the
insets for a button on 1.4.2 vs. 1.5.0_13
Java 1.4.2
top=3,left=14,bottom=3,right=14
Java 1.5.0_13
top=4,left=20,bottom=5,right=20
I use JGoodies Form Layout, and noticed that after upgrading to Leopard, all
my button bars (built with ButtonBarBuilder) had excessive spacing between
buttons.
I think Quaqua would fix these issues, but I haven't tried it yet.
