I looked at the javadoc for System.getProperties() <http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/lang/System.html#getProperties() > expecting to find it there but didn't. So, as Adrian points out this is not a mandated property. However, I think it is quite safe to use it. The property has been around for a long time and I think its become more like a de-facto standard. Certainly on Mac OSX, all versions of java honour it.
