The MacBinary Toolkit has an isAlias() method in MacFileForker. That class
also has methods to explicitly resolve the current target, i.e. resolve the
alias.

At the moment, there is no Mac OS X implementation of MacFileForker, so
you're still stuck for now. I am actively working on it, though. I'll ask
here when I get to the point of signing up beta-testers. Please don't
email me now if anyone wants to beta-test this. I'll just forget by the
time I'm actually ready.

As for resolving aliases now using File.getCanonicalPath() SHOULD resolve
aliases. If it doesn't, you should file a bug-report, I think. Obviously,
you have to use File.getCanonicalPath() to make a new File before trying to
use it for anything with embedded aliases.
