Alternative to Live Connect?

With no Live Connect in sight, I'm looking for some alternative
way to do the following...

I'm working with an existing code base that, in JavaScript
on a form submit does
theForm.someField.value = document.applets[0].getFieldContents();

that is, it calls a method "getFieldContents()" on the applet
in the page and sets that value into an HTML form field, which
then is sent as part of the submit.

One thought I had was to just make the whole thing a dialog
that is part of the applet instead of a form that acquires one
of its fields via an applet, but it is a complex multi-layer
page and would require significant re-architecting.

Does anyone know of a relatively simple alternative to this?
