Re: JSAPI

As a member of the JSR-113 expert group who are currently working out what JSAPI
2.0 is I'd like to chime in at this point and at least say "hi".

I'm speaking for myself here, rather than for the expert group as a whole, but
naturally we're all very interested in promoting JSAPI into new environments and
understanding what peolpe need. I personally believe the greatest stength JSAPI
has is that its the *only* significantly cross platform speech API with actual
implementations out there (please correct me if I'm wrong, I've never claimed to
know all there is to know about speech tech).

The reason I'm in the group is the work I did implementing a speech toolkit and
JSAPI on MRJ 2.2 for Mac OS 9. Old timers on this list (hi Nick, Patrick) might
remember me asking endless interrupt time related JDirect questions on this topic.

I'm also something of a supporter of open source, so, so far I've deliberately
avoided the Apple Speech Framework for OS X (to tell the truth, I haven't had
the time). Looking at the license on the Spelling Framework, I find it
depressingly ambiguous as to what my rights are under this license :( (Yes, I
can be more specific if it'll help).

My goals include implementing JSAPI 1.0 (and make sure 2.0 fits on Mac OS) on
Mac OS X. I'd love to do it ontop of the Speech Framework - but I'll do it by
porting my 9.X code if needbe. <sigh> so many details to work out when I'd
prefer to be getting on with making it work.
