what it takes to run Swing

It's a silly newbie question but I haven't found a decisive answer after several hours of reading heaps of documentation:
Everywhere, I am urged to switch to Swing. Besides the fact that I am realizing it's not that trivial, I'd like to know a few points:

On which platform will Swing run?

Will it require the average user with a _non_ brand new computer/OS (in particular MacOS< MacOS 9 to be specific) to download a plugin?
If yes, where is this plugin?

Talking about location of things to download, why is it clearly stated where to upload Swing on your hard drive for the WinNT OS and not for MacOS, because we are supposed to be bright enough (I could manage but I would have feeled reassured to be told)?

How do I know which JDK I am in, on the Sun server it's all they talk about, and on the mac server, they only talk about MRJ and MRJ SDK. Okay, I think I know the answer, it's JDK 1.1.8 for MRJ 2.2, right? But why don't they clearly say so?

Thanks
