How to detect hidden files under jre 1.1.8 ?

Hi,

I need to scan a directory and skip over hidden files it may contains,
unfortunately File.isHidden() is not available under jre 1.1.8 (this
function appear only with jre 1.2).

How can I detect hidden files under jre 1.1.8 (I want to stay away from jre
1.2) ?

If there is no "pure java" solution, I'm ok with a Macintosh only + a
Windows only (+ a unix only) solution.
