More OS X applet questions

Hello,

I'm very happy that I finally saw our project's applet almost run under OS X this week, using the IE 5.1.1 and Java DP. The applet is basically a Swing-based chat window that communicates with a server using HTTP (preferably HTTPS). It previously worked is OS 9, and under OS X using IE 5.0 with Classic, but Classic's stability is not stellar, so I'm definitely looking forward to a fully functional OS X version.

I have experienced several problems.

1) It shows up (in beautiful, but big Aqua) under IE with OS X. It still doesn't work at all with OmniWeb, my preferred browser.

2) Keyboard input doesn't seem to work (a problem for a chat client). Finding a workaround for this is difficult because...

3) When I open the Java Messages window in IE, there is no output visible. Are the Java messages going somewhere else?

4) As was the case with OS 9, HTTP connections through the browser using SSL do not work. Is this a temporary condition? In OS 9 I put in platform-specific code to use HTTP (and to do posts manually to work around the IE POST problems) At least w/ JSSE, unlike with OS 9, I can use a secure connection, but we also hope that tunnelling through the browser will give us access to firewalls, without providing our own firewall code.

Any comments and ideas for workarounds would be appreciated.

Robert
