Cross platform preferences?

I am investigating releasing a tool created originally for internal use as a
"shareware" type application. The tool is currently written in Java, and it
would be nice to keep it in Java for the larger user base.

The problem I am concerned with is how does one deal with a registration
preference in a cross platform way? I can't think of any good solutions
other than having two different binaries (the demo one and the real one).

Has anyone experimented with this?

In general, how should preferences be stored in a cross platform manner? I
want to target Mac OS X, Solaris, Windows NT/2000/XP, and Linux. Since the
app uses Swing, I doubt Mac OS 9 is a viable target.
