Re: JDK 1.4 support in OS X

What would make developing Java on a mac more
appealing:

* Latest Version of Java Appears on Mac first, not
Last

As was said, unless Apple buys Sun, or Sun produces OS X JDK directly/indirectly, ain't gonna happen. I personally find Java on OS X extremely appealing, and easy to use, but heck, what to do I know ... I work 8 - 10 hours a day on Windoze 2000, Solaris, Linux and OS X boxes every day and find OS X the easiest of them.

* More Product Availability (porting of Development
tools and software)

Unless I missed something, there's a heck of a lot of stuff out there that runs on OS X, courtesy of its Unix roots. And more stuff is porting over each day. Shell scripts seem to run seamlessly on OS X as well. I'd suggest getting and installing the Bash shell stuff too. Suh-wheet to be able to take my Linux Java stuff and just run it on the Mac.

* A Better GUI and Faster OS

Not worth commenting on ... well, see below, I changed my mind...

Problem Area: A Better GUI and Faster OS
OS X is the slowest OS available today. It is not
stable in my experience. I crash at least once a day,
either from kernel panic or a system freeze. I have
had 2 disasters on OS X that required initializing my
HD

Well, I think we should all sell our Apple shares on this news. No wait. Let's throw these worthless piece of !@#$ Apple computers out the windows and buy Windows. Better yet, let's post yet another "JDK 1.4" question!

I reboot my 550 MHz G4 Ti laptop about once a month when I'm really pounding on it -- usually when a software update kicks in at that. And, to let you know, I run J2EE applications on it, as well as Jini services, and mammoth GUI applications. I also build big Java builds with Ant -- same as / faster than Unix and Linux builds, and MHz for MHz faster than my 1+ GHz Win2K box with its high speed hard drive. I do the same on my ancient G3 Beige ... so I concur with the other poster. You've got some other issue. In previous experience, sloppy electrical supplies can fry anything.

Oh, by the way, what do you mean by "better GUI and faster OS"?
