Re: compiling ant to a native binary



Fwiw, I've read on several occasions that the byte code generated by jikes isn't always reliable. I don't know why or under what circumstances it produces "bad" code, but for that reason alone, I won't use jikes and would caution others to be careful.

Perhaps this problem has been addressed and jikes is now perfectly compatible. But I haven't heard and don't keep up on it.

I'd actually recommend that you try switching to the jikes compiler. It's significantly faster than javac, and should speed up your build.

In your ant project, just include the property <property name="build.compiler" value="jikes"/> in your initialization.

By the way, Apple provides jikes with its dev tools. It's broken. Go to <http://oss.software.ibm.com/developerworks/opensource/jikes/>, download the latest version, and do a ./configure, make, make install. Works just fine.
