Perhaps this problem has been addressed and jikes is now perfectly compatible. But I haven't heard and don't keep up on it.

I've been using Jikes on MacOS X in development and we use it in production on Linux. I've not experienced anything that would lead me to believe it was producing bad bytecode. Nor have I read anything claiming that.
BTW, anyone know if Jikes development is still progressing? The jikes page here:

says 1.18 was released on 2002-11-22.
